Defending champion Silver Legacy Resort Casino won again in the casino division, but five-time winner Havin' an Affair of Las Vegas was knocked to third in the general division of the 2011 Great International Chicken Wing Society cookoff.
Newcomer Pie Face Pizza Co. took first for its sauce in the 10th annual event's general division, held Friday through Monday. Pizza Plus placed second. Redneck BBQ of Reno placed fourth, and Famous Dave's received fifth place.
Despite the upset in the general division, the People's Choice Award did go to Havin' an Affair.
Four other hotel-casinos participated in this year's event: The Club Cal Neva, Circus Circus Reno, the Eldorado Hotel Casino and Harrah's Reno. The Cal-Neva and Harrah's tied for second, and Circus Circus placed third, while tying with general division Sneakers Bar and Grill for the Media's Choice award on Friday.
About 55,000 people, more than 100 vendors and 20 cookers participated in this year's cookoff, said Willie Davison, the self-proclaimed "Chicken Wing King" and founder of the Great International Chicken Wing Society.
"I'm ecstatic about this year's turnout, and I'm looking forward to next year's 11th annual cookoff," Davison said.
Davison said the amount of wings served surpassed the 20,000 pounds served last year, though he didn't know by how much Monday afternoon.
